A Look at Coolsculpting Zeltiq

October 23, 2012

Otherwise referred to as Cryolipolysis, Coolsculpting is a fat removal treatment technique researched and patented by Zeltiq, a US based company founded in 2005 with a mission to create clinically proven fat removal treatment techniques that are not only safe but also effective. Research on Cryolipolysis was conducted by Drs. Dieter Manstein and Rox Anderson at the Wellman Center at the Massachusetts General Hospital that also serves as a teaching center for Havard Medical School.

Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive fat removal treatment technique whose research and development followed the premise that such treatment techniques as laser and ultrasound could penetrate the skin and destroy deposited fat cells. Instead of the laser light or ultrasound waves, research established that coldness could also act in the same way safely.

Research on this treatment technique actually established that extreme cold could effective destroy fat cells than with the other treatment techniques. The technique therefore involves application of coldness to part of the body with fat deposits. The low temperature is set in such a way that while it goes below the body’s normal temperature, the same is maintained above freezing point. This is to avoid frostbite.

After several research studies in which the technique was tested on pigs and other animals, study on human beings begun in 2008 with results reported in 2009. The study involved ten people receiving single treatment session on their love handles. While assessment conducted after a period of two months showed a 20% fat reduction, a further assessment after six months showed a further 25% reduction in fat deposits.

Although it has remained unknown how long one can continue to have such reduced fat deposits, it has been authoritatively established that those receiving Cryolipolysis fat removal treatment need to embark on or continue with healthy diets, exercise routines and most importantly, a healthy lifestyle. The treatment has particularly been found to be very effective in removing body fat that usually remains after one has performed exercises and stuck on a healthy diet for some time.

Like with any other treatment technique, Cryolipolysis too has its own unique side effects. However, its side effects are very minimal and fade away without the use of any medications. Redness on treated areas, bruising, skin numbness, scarring and ulcerations are some of the side effects that have been reported. Studies on long-term side effects have showed no signs of any.

Coolsculpting Zeltiq definitely joins a list of other non-invasive fat removal treatment techniques that have been around for some time now. Those in need of shedding off excess body weight can seek Cryolipolysis treatment knowing that it has been approved by the FDA purposely as a safe fat removal treatment technique.

Based at Pleasanton, California in the USA, Zeltiq Company continues to do further research on its product and it can only be hoped that it will make further improvements on its technique, which has found favor with both patients and medical surgeons. Other organizations that continue to partner with Zeltiq in further improving the technology include Venture Capital, Aisling capital, Venrock Capital, Frazier Healthcare Ventures and Advanced Technology Ventures.
